NEW YORK — AUSTIN, Texas — Rose essential oil comes from a plant in Peru, but the rose oil that is commonly known as “rose oil” is made from a different plant, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin said the discovery could help scientists better understand how rose oil was created.
They say their study shows rose essential oils are made by a plant called Cucurbita rhamnosus, which is native to the tropical rainforest of Peru.
The research appears in the journal Nature Plants.
Cultural differences and the presence of plants in Peru have led scientists to believe the rose essential Oil is derived from a seedling of the same plant, said co-author Jennifer A. Ruhm, a professor of plant sciences.
This plant is actually called Pseudocucurbus rhamnosus, meaning “seedling of rose.”
Ruhm’s research shows that P. rhamnum is not the same as C. ramsis, a species of rose that grows in Brazil and parts of Europe.
Ramsis is also known as the Spanish rose, the African rose, and the European rose.
A new study, however, suggests that the rose seeds that form rose essential oils are actually derived from plants that are more than 50,000 years old.
Rose oils can be extracted from a variety of plants, and they are often used as a medicine and cosmetic ingredient.
In the new study led by Ruhn, the team analyzed the chemical composition of the rose ointment used in Courier-Post’s Rose Essential Oil product.
After isolating the Rose Essential Ointment and other oils from various plants, the scientists found that the essential oils in rose essentialoins had more complex molecular structures than those found in the oils used to make the oil.
“This means that these oils are not the seeds that are being used to produce the rose,” Ruh, the lead author, said.
While scientists have known for decades that rose essentialoes contain chemical components that are unique to plants, they had not been able to figure out what those chemicals are until now.
Since the discovery of the seeds of the seedling plant, scientists have been able for the first time to see the structure of the essential oil molecules and understand how they were created.
“The most exciting thing is that we’re now able to see what these molecular structures look like, and how they are formed,” Ruf said.
